Student Carers Working Group: Initial Meeting

Student carers form a broad group that includes young carers in school or in further or higher education, and higher education students with parental or other care responsibilities. All might experience inequalities that may limit progression at each stage of their educational journey. This new Working Group has been set up to share research and practice that effectively support outreach activity and access, success and progression for these students.

Exploring the impact of ethnicity on access, success & progression to higher education

Part of our NERUPI series focused on specific student groups highlighted by the Office for Students through their Equalities of Opportunities Risk Register. A specific cluster of risks affect the participation of minority ethnic groups, particularly those identified as ‘black’ or ‘mixed’. These include quality of information and guidance, perceptions of HE, lower application success rates, insufficient academic and personal support, mental health issues and progression to employment. This session provided an overview of the OfS approach, considering the strengths and limitations of the categories and risk-based system.

Creative HE Employability Series: Creative Shift, University of Arts London

Creative Shift at University of Arts London explained its approach to offering opportunities for underrepresented groups to build networks and develop professional practice through collaborations with industry partners on live briefs, masterclasses, networking groups, internships, and talks.

STEM Working Group: Medicine not Medics

This session followed on from the previous meeting with a focus on Outreach activity and particularly CEIAG. Louise Crabtree lead the session with a Lightning Talk about the University of Leeds’ ‘Medicine – not just medics’ programme.

Mapping Activities to the NERUPI Framework

This event was for those new to evaluation or who wanted to find out more about the NERUPI Framework. Annette Hayton started by introducing the ideas behind the six main NERUPI aims and explained the benefits to planning, evaluation and reporting of mapping your activities on to the Framework. Ruth Pickles and Grace May from Bath Spa University and Liz Routhorn from London Metropolitan University provided practical examples of how they used the approach in their organisations to map activities to the aims and outcomes.

Writing Journal Articles: Session 1 The Abstract

This workshop was the first in a series of five workshop sessions led by Professor Vikki Boliver and Dr Clare Gartland. The workshops support NERUPI members in sharing and disseminating their research and evaluation around their vital work in WP and social justice. The first session focussed on drafting an abstract as this is a great way to get started on your article. Drafting your abstract will help you to clarify the core aims of your article as well as help you remember what you are trying to achieve.

STEM Working Group: Initial Meeting

The first meeting for the STEM working group took place on the 15th May 2-4pm. The STEM working group has been set up to share practice and ideas about ways to improve outreach activity, support access, and effectively support success and progression in STEM. The first working group session started with a lightning talk from Becca Sweeney from Imperial College London about how the Dangoor Reach out Makerspace is supporting underserved young people from local communities to engage hands on with STEM. Becca discussed challenges faced and lessons learnt from her work in this space. The meeting provided opportunities to meet other people working in STEM outreach and supporting students on course.

This session we were joined by Josie Holding, from the Occupational Therapy team at Leeds Conservatoire. Josie discussed their approach, impact on students and benefits of bridging the gap between disability services and wellbeing support using Occupational Therapy.
