STEM Working Group: Medicine not Medics
Date: 12th June 2025
Location: Online 2.00-3.30
Please note this event is for Members onlyThe next and final meeting for this academic year of the STEM working group will take place on the 12th June 2-4pm. This session will follow on from the previous meeting with a focus on Outreach activity and particularly CEIAG. Louise Crabtree will lead the session with a Lightning Talk about the University of Leeds’ ‘Medicine – not just medics’ programme.
The subject of medicine interests many students not all are going to become doctors. Our ‘Medicine – not just medics’ outreach programme aims to showcase the alternative pathways and careers in STEM which students, and possibly their teachers, may not have considered. Louise will discuss the rationale behind the project, who we target and why, as well as the evaluation and challenges.
Louise Crabtree started her career as an analytical chemist before moving into environmental management. It was here that she became involved with a charity that provided visits to industry for schools and her interest in outreach began. She is now one of the Lead Officers in the STEM outreach team at the University of Leeds, working on programmes for under-represented students, including summer schools, and taster days. Alongside that she co-leads the pre-16 outreach group and GTRSB working group.
