NERUPI BAME Outcome Gap Event 1 Programme

Suggested pre-reading:

Race, education and social mobility: We all need to dream the same dream and want the same thing - Jason Arday (2020)

Attempting to break the chain: reimaging inclusive pedagogy and decolonising the curriculum within the academy - Jason Arday, Dina Zoe Belluigi & Dave Thomas (2020)

The attainment gap between students from different backgrounds has now been accepted as a real and urgent issue for the HE sector. However, strategies for addressing this remain underdeveloped and solutions are not straightforward. To better understand the BAME outcome gap and to support constructive work towards real solutions, these events will focus on the broader cultural issues within the academy which are at the heart of the outcome disparity for some BAME students and look at some examples of best practice in the sector.

These will be half-day events and run online.

Event 1 - 14 October 2020, 2:00-5:00 pm

Jason Arday (Durham University) will provide the context with Berekhet Berakhy and Dorrie Chetty from University of Westminster adding insights on institutional change.

Event 2 - 11 November 2020, 2:00-5:00 pm

Nona McDuff OBE (Solent University) followed by Dave Thomas ( University of Kent) will talk on curriculum change.

Event 3 - 3 December 2020, 2:00-5:00 pm

The third event is a panel discussion, an opportunity to debate the issues and start to identify constructive ways forward. Speakers from the previous events will be present at the panel discussion.
